On this episode of Talking Shop, we're joined by Dan Cate, CEO and Founder of SoldThrough. Dan is a heavyweight retail executive who has spent decades steering the merchandising and digital operations of America’s most iconic retail institutions, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to Century 21 and Lord & Taylor. Today, through his platform SoldThrough, Dan helps international fashion brands cross the Atlantic and crack the notoriously brutal U.S. retail landscape. We break down his journey from the shop floor to the C-suite, the operational indicators that prove a brand is truly ready for international expansion, and how to navigate a fragmented American market without destroying your margins. We also discuss how to balance localised inventory with central efficiency, and the one non-negotiable metric that tells you a product has found genuine market fit.

Aldi Scotland has revealed its volume share of the grocery market has increased to 11%, moving ahead of Morrisons and Sainsbury’s for the first time to become the third biggest supermarket, according to new data from Kantar.

Aldi Scotland now commands a higher volume market share than Co-op (7.2%), Sainsbury’s (7.6%), Lidl (8.9%) and Morrisons (8.8%), in Scotland, behind only Asda (13.8%) and Tesco (24%).

The data looked at volume market share over a 12-week period until 14 May.

The record volume market share comes as Aldi prepares to return to the Royal Highland Show 2023. Now in its 201st year, Scotland’s biggest outdoor event will head to the Ingliston showground in Edinburgh to showcase the best of the country’s food, farming, and rural life, and is expected to attract around 200,000 people.

Graham Nicolson, group buying director, Aldi Scotland, said: “This is a momentous moment for Aldi in Scotland, as we continue to build our presence within the Scottish market. We are committed to offering our customers top quality products at affordable prices and as the data shows people are switching to shopping with Aldi in their droves.

“We are very proud of the strong relationship we have built with our Scottish suppliers, which gives our customers the opportunity to purchase locally sourced high-quality products and support Scottish businesses.”
