On this episode of Talking Shop, we're joined by Dan Cate, CEO and Founder of SoldThrough. Dan is a heavyweight retail executive who has spent decades steering the merchandising and digital operations of America’s most iconic retail institutions, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to Century 21 and Lord & Taylor. Today, through his platform SoldThrough, Dan helps international fashion brands cross the Atlantic and crack the notoriously brutal U.S. retail landscape. We break down his journey from the shop floor to the C-suite, the operational indicators that prove a brand is truly ready for international expansion, and how to navigate a fragmented American market without destroying your margins. We also discuss how to balance localised inventory with central efficiency, and the one non-negotiable metric that tells you a product has found genuine market fit.

The White Company has launched a search for five new London stores as part of its plans to expand, Drapers has reported.

The news comes as a few UK retail property agents have been sent a list of locations that the retailer would like to open stores in, including Blackheath, Clapham, Chiswick, Hampstead and Notting Hill

This expansion would see the company open more small-format branches, as it is said to be looking for spaces between 1,000 to 1,500 sq ft.

One property source told Drapers: “The retailer is looking for small London village stores. [In] locations such as Marylebone high street, they are trading really well so they’re trying to pick up more stores in those types of places.”

The White Company was founded by Chrissie Rucker in 1994 and is currently led by Mary Homer, who joined as CEO in 2017 from Topshop.

It continues to be a successful UK lifestyle brand, as operating profit reached £32.7m in the year ended 30 July 2022. This was a 17% increase from £27.9m in the previous year.

According to the retailer, it was driven by a 9% revenue rise in its clothing division following strong performance of homeware during the pandemic and a 65% increase in store sales.
