The CEO of Sainsbury’s Simon Roberts received a pay packet of £4.95m last year in the form of cash and shares.

The bulk of this award was a £1.7m bonus and £2.2m in share awards alongside Roberts’ £899,000 base pay, a 3.5% increase.

Overall this figure of £4.95m was an increase of 41% compared with his pay packet of £3.5m the year before.

This news comes after Sainsbury’s pre-tax profits fell to £327m in the year ended 5 March down from £854m in the same period last year.

It also comes as shoppers face unprecedented levels of food inflation despite the fall in energy costs.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics state that food inflation in April was at 19.3%, only slightly down from the record high of 19.6% in March.
