Sephora to open new store in Manchester Arndale

Sephora to open new store in Manchester Arndale

On this episode of Talking Shop, we're joined by Dan Cate, CEO and Founder of SoldThrough. Dan is a heavyweight retail executive who has spent decades steering the merchandising and digital operations of America’s most iconic retail institutions, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s to Century 21 and Lord & Taylor. Today, through his platform SoldThrough, Dan helps international fashion brands cross the Atlantic and crack the notoriously brutal U.S. retail landscape. We break down his journey from the shop floor to the C-suite, the operational indicators that prove a brand is truly ready for international expansion, and how to navigate a fragmented American market without destroying your margins. We also discuss how to balance localised inventory with central efficiency, and the one non-negotiable metric that tells you a product has found genuine market fit.

Sephora has signed a 10-year lease to occupy a 7,300 sq ft space at the Manchester Arndale shopping centre later this year.

Stocking over 300 skincare, cosmetic and beauty brands, the new store at Manchester Arndale will provide space for Sephora to showcase the array of brands on offer. It will be the retailer’s eighth UK store.

As well as stocking beauty brands, the shop will also have its own dedicated Sephora Collection section with a range of cosmetics, body care and hair care.

Sephora will be the latest retailer to join the shopping centre as it welcomed 23 new tenants in 2024, including Go outdoors, B&M, Space NK and Rituals

Sarah Boyd, managing director Sephora UK, said: “Manchester showed us phenomenal support when we opened our first store in the region, which blew away all our expectations. We are thrilled to be bringing a second beauty playground to our customers in this vibrant and culturally rich city, allowing us to reach even more shoppers with a city centre location at Manchester Arndale.

“We already know there is strong appetite from beauty enthusiasts in Manchester as we saw 2000 eager customers queue on official opening day last year, and we look forward to recreating the same energy at Manchester Arndale as we continue to provide a beauty experience like no other.”

Steve Gray, head of European retail asset management at Global Mutual, added: “Sephora is an excellent addition to the Manchester Arndale line up as it cements our position as the go-to destination for beauty and fashion brands.

“The arrival of Sephora continues the strong momentum of international brands selecting Manchester Arndale as they expand their UK retail footprint. This highlights the confidence these retailers have in Manchester Arndale’s continued strong performance and how we continue to attract shoppers from across the North West and beyond.”

Scott Linard, portfolio director for M&G Real Estate, concluded: “Through the addition of another globally recognised international retailer, Manchester Arndale is enhancing its reputation as the leading retail hub in the North West. We expect Sephora’s product range to really align well with our young shopper demographic who are eager to sample new and exciting brands.

“Following a bumper 2024, Sephora’s signing helps us start 2025 with a bang, and we hope to welcome even more exciting names during the next 12 months.”
