Asda relaunches hunt for new CEO
The company has been without a permanent CEO since the departure of Roger Burnley in August 2021 following a fallout with Asda’s private equity backers, TDR Capital
Allan Leighton, Asda’s chair, has reportedly restarted the hunt for a new CEO after a failed effort by his predecessor, Lord Rose, the Telegraph reported.
Leighton, who returned to Asda in November, having previously run the supermarket from 1996 until 2000, stated that he is looking for a candidate who he can work alongside rather than oversee.
The news comes after the group announced its plans to roll out its largest Rollback price cuts campaign in years, which aims to steer the retailer through “tough competition and revitalise its performance”.
The company has been without a permanent CEO since the departure of Roger Burnley in August 2021 following a fallout with Asda’s private equity backers, TDR Capital.
Following Burnley’s departure, co-owner Mohsin Issa took over in 2022 while a replacement was sought.
A City headhunter added that Leighton would require “a fresh approach and a new pair of eyes” to secure a new CEO.
Asda has been contacted for comment.
