Fenwick unveils £40m renovation plan for Newcastle flagship store

Architect Ben Mailen of Mailen Design, who has strong ties to the city, oversaw the frontage design

Fenwick has reportedly revealed plans for a £40m investment to renovate the facade of its Newcastle flagship store, according to ITV News.

The group has submitted a planning application to Newcastle City Council, and includes opening up the ground floor windows, building a modern new canopy and welcoming shoppers through a “grand” central entry on Northumberland Street.

Architect Ben Mailen of Mailen Design, who has strong ties to the city, has overseen the frontage design.

The team was also granted access to Fenwick’s historical archives, and the numerous transformations the Newcastle store has undergone over the past 140 years served as inspiration for the design.

Kieran McBride, the Newcastle store director told ITV News: “Our Newcastle store has played an iconic role within the city centre since 1882, and this programme is all about continuing to play that role and more into the future.”
“This new frontage will ensure everyone can receive a warm welcome into our store and maintain our position as the destination of choice for shoppers across the region.”
