Amazon has plans to cut a further 9,000 jobs in the areas of cloud computing and advertising as a way to cut its expenses.
The news came in the form of an announcement by CEO Andy Jassy that was shared with the e-retailer’s employees yesterday (20 March).
However, Jassy did not specify which countries would be affected, but said the positions would be closed in the next few weeks.
The firm already axed 18,000 jobs after Christmas, as the company’s sales have recently slowed down due to consumer discretionary spending being impacted by the cost-of-living crisis.
Jassy said: “I remain very optimistic about the future and the myriad of opportunities we have, both in our largest businesses, Stores and AWS, and our newer customer experiences and businesses in which we’re investing.
“To those ultimately impacted by these reductions, I want to thank you for the work you have done on behalf of customers and the company. It’s never easy to say goodbye to our teammates, and you will be missed.”
He added: “To those who will continue with us, I look forward to partnering with you as we make life easier for customers every day and relentlessly inventing to do so.”
