Tesco axes Jack’s discount brand

The company will also close the meat, fish and hot deli counters in 317 stores where it sees the ‘lowest’ demand

Tesco has announced that it will no longer operate stores under the Jack’s brand in a bid to focus on its “core” business. Of the 13 Jack’s stores, six will be converted to Tesco superstores, with the remaining seven stores to close in the coming months.

130 roles in the seven closing stores and in head office will be affected by these changes. However, in the six stores that will be converted to Tesco, Jack’s colleagues will reportedly be offered in-store roles.

Meanwhile, Tesco also announced it will close the meat, fish and hot deli counters in 317 stores where the company sees the “lowest” demand, but the counters will remain open in 279 Tesco stores where there is local customer demand.

The company said there will be no redundancies related to these counter changes as colleagues will be offered alternative roles.

Jason Tarry, Tesco UK and ROI CEO, said: “We have learnt a huge amount from Jack’s and this has helped Tesco become more competitive, more efficient and strengthened our value proposition, including through the launch of Aldi Price Match. In turn, this has enabled us to consistently attract new customers to Tesco from our competitors over the last two years.

“Our Jack’s brand will continue to be sold across Booker and our symbol brands, bringing great value and quality to even more customers. Our priority is to find roles within our wider business for all the colleagues who want to stay with us.”
