Carphone Warehouse closes all sites in Ireland

Dixons Carphone shutdown its 69 standalone Carphone Warehouses in the country and 12 in-store branches

Carphone Warehouse has announced the closure of all its sites in Ireland with immediate effect.

This includes its 69 standalone Carphone Warehouses and 12 in-store branches, employing 450 people, and the brand has stopped taking orders via its Irish website.

However, this move is not set to affect Currys PC World Ireland, which is also part of the Dixons Carphone group.

In a statement to customers on its website, Carphone Warehouse said: “As part of Dixons Carphone’s broader transformation, of one joined up and profitable business, it has made the difficult but necessary decision to close Carphone Warehouse in Ireland, in line with its decision to close all standalone Carphone Warehouse stores in the UK in 2020.

“Customers are changing the way they buy mobile devices and connectivity, replacing their handsets less often and buying them separately or as part of more flexible bundles. Although these changes in behaviour were anticipated, they were expected to occur over a longer period of time.”

It added: “However, the change in shopping behaviours has been accelerated by the pandemic.”

Prior to this news breaking, Dixons Carphone announced the appointment of Moira Thomas to the new role of group director of Sustainability and ESG.

On her appointment, Assad Malic, group director of Strategy and Corporate Affairs, said: “The global pandemic continues to highlight the crucial role amazing technology plays in people’s lives, and we’re helping more people than ever benefit from it.

“Our approach ensures we do this in a way that is sustainable – from how we interact with our customers and support our communities, through to how we power our properties and source, transport, repair, recycle, reuse or repackage the products we sell.”

He added: “With her experience and expertise, Moira will play a critical role in elevating our ESG strategy across the Group. I am delighted to welcome her to the team.”

Thomas said: “It’s an exciting time to be joining Dixons Carphone, which is balancing the need to meet unprecedented demand for vital technology, with doing right by the planet and communities.

“I’m looking forward to helping the business continue to put purpose at the heart of everything it does, galvanising its expertise, scale and reach to help everyone benefit from amazing technology.”
